A P Plater has been detected travelling at 145kmh on the Midland Highway at Mangalore earlier today.
An unmarked police motorcyclist detected a red Mazda 3 sedan travelling south on the Midland Highway at Mangalore about 9am travelling at 145kmh – 65 kmh above the posted speed limit of 80km/h.
The 21 year old Bridgewater man had his vehicle clamped for 28 days and was charged with excessive speed. He will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.
Sergeant Steve Dine of Southern Road Policing Service said that a vehicle travelling at that speed in that location at any time of day was extremely concerning.
"The smallest error of judgement or miscalculation could have had fatal consequences for the driver and other road users," Sergeant Dine said.
Tasmania Police will continue to focus on the Fatal Five during the Easter break and remind each and every driver to focus on speed, wearing seatbelts, monitor fatigue, distraction and drink and drug driving.
