Spot Inspires Future Generations At Science Week

Dept of Agriculture

Spot, our beloved robot dog had a big day out at Parliament House during National Science Week 2024. While Spot was a star attraction, this event was more than just a photo opportunity.

National Science Week was a great chance to showcase Spot's skills and tools to protect Australia's economy, community and environment from biosecurity risks.

Spot is being tested on the frontlines of Australia's biosecurity efforts, using advanced AI and machine learning to inspect cargo containers and identify potential biosecurity risks.

Shipping containers are a major pathway for exotic pests, which can pose significant risks to our environment and agriculture.

The department is working to improve Spot's ability to autonomously inspect containers on its own. This will help detect threats more effectively and protect frontline workers from dangerous environments, making biosecurity efforts safer and more efficient.

The many selfies taken with Spot reflected the excitement it stirred, as young people enthusiastically shared their ideas about potential uses for this technology.

We look forward to seeing these curious minds become the leaders in Australia's biosecurity efforts.
