Springfield Runners Shine After Rainy Month

It was a case of the third time lucky when fundraisers in Springfield finally hit the track to support breast cancer patients in their community.

The Springfield Community 5k Your Way International Women's Day Fun Run presented by Queensland X-Ray was due to be held at the Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday 9 March – but was called off as Tropical Cyclone Alfred closed in on South East Queensland.

The event had attracted 1000 participants and was rescheduled for Sunday 30 March, only to be cancelled as another deluge of rain soaked the region.

But on Monday night a 25-strong group of fun runners, including local Federal MPs Milton Dick and Shayne Neumann, stepped out at Brighton Homes Arena to celebrate raising $27,000 to support breast cancer services, patients and life-saving research at Mater, including Springfield's Mater Cancer Care Centre.

Event committee chair Tracy Bold thanked the community for its support.

"The weather tried to beat us, but it didn't. We were still able to raise over $27,000 to help fight breast cancer," Ms Bold said.

The committee is already planning the return of the fun run on Sunday 8 March 2026.

Mater Foundation Chief Executive Officer Andrew Thomas said this year's Mater Chicks in Pink International Women's Day Fun Run raised more than $1.7m across Queensland, despite a month of weather-related disruption.

"Nothing could stop the determination of Queenslanders to support breast cancer patients, especially here in Springfield," Mr Thomas said.

"Raising $27,000 is an awesome result, but it will be even more impressive next year when Springfield comes together and unites as a community to support women fighting breast cancer now and into the future."
