Squadron Suppliers Lead Way

RAAF

Supply personnel are now undertaking basic C-130J flightline maintenance tasks following the implementation of a Non-Technical Authorisation (NTA) initiative at 37 Squadron.

The initiative was developed by 37 Squadron's Flight Sergeant Phillip Spencer and Sergeant Terry Bain in alignment with Defence Aviation Safety Authority regulations.

Logistics Officer Flight Lieutenant Peter Chung said the NTA will increase the scope of support to flightline operations at RAAF Base Richmond and abroad, enhancing the resilience and responsiveness of C-130J aircraft-servicing activities.

"Through the introduction of a structured work experience program, tailored non-technical skills training, and a rigorous evaluation framework, supply personnel are now actively contributing to essential flightline functions at 37 Squadron," Flight Lieutenant Chung said.

These responsibilities include aircraft configuration management, aircraft receipt and dispatch, refuelling operations and other essential support tasks that were traditionally exclusive to maintenance personnel.

"The initiative is enhancing the depth of the 37 Squadron workforce to maximise our aviators' diverse skills, alongside maintaining adherence to aviation safety regulations," Flight Lieutenant Chung said.

"The achievement of NTA at 37 Squadron has already demonstrated tangible benefits, which have enhanced coordination between maintenance and logistics teams, thus greatly increasing operational flexibility."

The integration of supply personnel into the maintenance space has not only optimised usage of the workforce, it has also fostered a more cohesive and responsive operational environment.

"As 37 Squadron continues to refine and expand the application of the NTA initiative, this approach serves as a benchmark for other Defence aviation units looking to enhance their own operational effectiveness," Flight Lieutenant Chung said.

"The ability to adapt and implement such innovative workforce solutions highlights the squadron's commitment to maintaining high readiness levels, while ensuring compliance with safety standards."
