- More than $1.6 million in funding allocated for squash centre upgrade
- Interior works almost complete
- External renovations to bring ageing facility to contemporary standard
Players are already reaping the benefits from upgrades underway at the Belmont Squash and Sports Centre with $1.6 million in funding allocated to the project through the State Sporting Infrastructure Fund.
Squash WA is managing the works through a staged approach and the upgraded facilities made it possible for Western Australia to host the 2024 Australian National Squash Championships at the centre in June.
Most of the interior works have been completed with the exterior of the 1970s-built centre about to get a new faade. The plans include a lift to access the first floor, relocation of the stairs, and the addition of a verandah to bring the facility up to a contemporary standard.
Works already completed include:
- new flooring for all courts;
- glass front and rear walls installed for most courts;
- lighting upgrade to meet the Australian standard;
- remodelled and upgraded changerooms; and
- accessible facilities.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:
"I am delighted that the Cook Labor Government is continuing to support much needed renovations at the Belmont Squash and Sports Centre.
"Since 2020, about $1.6 million in funding has been allocated to the upgrade project through the State Sporting Infrastructure Fund to bring the facility to a contemporary standard and support the future of squash in Western Australia.
"These upgrades enabled the centre to successfully host the 2024 Australian National Squash Championships.
"Squash is a fun, healthy and challenging sport that offers significant potential for both
personal and community development.
"Finalising the renovations will allow Squash WA to realise their aims to expand player and community participation in squash at all levels and to enhance the quality of the experience."
As stated by Belmont MLA Cassie Rowe:
"It is fantastic to see these upgrades taking shape here in Belmont. Squash is a popular sport for many locals but also for people who travel to Belmont to take advantage of the facilities here.
"I am pleased and proud to be part of a Government that is investing in community sporting infrastructure."
