If you have a passion for the future of our region and want to bring about positive change in our community, this year's Council Elections could be the perfect opportunity.
Whether it be shaping the services Council provides, guiding the direction of major projects or being a voice for your local community, becoming a Mildura Rural City Councillor is a way to make a real difference.
Council is partnering with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) to provide a series of Community and Candidate Information sessions and pop-up stalls between now and the Council Elections in October.
The sessions are aimed at equipping potential candidates with everything they need to know about becoming a Councillor, including:
- How to nominate as a candidate in the elections
- What is involved in being a Councillor
- What to expect soon after the election
- Roles and responsibilities of Councillors, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor
- The role of local Councils
- Support available once you become a Councillor.
Sunraysia-based in-person sessions will be held from next month and promoted once dates are confirmed.
Mildura Rural City Council General Manager Corporate Performance Kate Henschke encouraged local residents with a passion for their community to consider standing in this year's Council Elections.
"This is an opportunity that only comes around every four years and I'd encourage anyone with a passion for their community and a desire to make our region an even better place to live to stand as a candidate," Ms Henschke said.
"We're fortunate to have a rich and diverse demographic in our region and it would be great to see this diversity represented in the Council chambers.
"Whether it be younger people, our LGBTIQA+ community, people from multicultural backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents, the greater the diversity the better our community is represented.
"You don't need any special qualifications, just a passion for our community's future."

This year's Council Elections coincide with a major change to our municipality's electoral structure following a review by the Victorian Government last year.
The Government has broken our region up into nine single-councillor wards. This means election candidates must now nominate the ward they wish to represent. It also means candidates can only vote for candidates representing the ward in which they live.
