State Government Unlocks Wheatbelt Land For New Housing

  • Crown land transfer to Shire of Narrogin for residential development
  • 1,785 square metres of land to be transferred in freehold at discounted rate
  • Housing Diversity Pipeline supports growing demand for housing in the Wheatbelt region

The Cook Labor Government has approved the sale of Crown land in the Wheatbelt region to deliver residential and key worker housing to the Shire of Narrogin.

The land on Northwood Street in Narrogin will be sold at a discounted price to the Shire of Narrogin to deliver a range of housing options and boost the availability of affordable housing within the community.

The site is being transferred as part of the Cook Government's Housing Diversity Pipeline program, which seeks to partner with local government, industry and not-for-profit organisations to deliver housing outcomes on State Government landholdings that meet the needs of local communities.

The Shire expressed interest in acquiring the site for more residential housing, including key worker accommodation, driven by growth in renewable industry projects and other regional initiatives.

The State Government has agreed to transfer the 1,785 square metre site to the Shire at a 50 per cent discount, highlighting the Government's commitment to provide more housing options throughout regional Western Australia.

As stated by Lands and Housing Minister John Carey:

"Our Government is doing everything we can to bolster the supply of housing throughout Western Australia through our record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.

"The Housing Diversity Pipeline is unlocking lazy government land to boost housing supply and the sale of the land is expected to promote regional growth, economic diversification and contribute positively to the long-term growth in the Shire of Narrogin.

"We continue to work with regional local governments to identify land for housing and other projects that support our regional communities."
