- State Government grant to support critical coastal infrastructure maintenance
- City of Bunbury to take responsibility for key coastal assets following State and Federal-funded upgrades
The City of Bunbury will take over responsibility for the maintenance of critical coastal protection infrastructure in Bunbury, thanks to a one-off State Government grant of $800,000.
The funding will enable the City of Bunbury to assume responsibility for the Eastern (Koombana Bay) Groyne and the Leschenault Inlet training walls and surrounding coastal land.
The area has until now been unallocated Crown land but will now be vested to the City of Bunbury.
Under the new arrangements, the State Government will manage the upgrades of the groynes and training walls which has been financed jointly through the Australian Government's Disaster Ready Fund, Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront, and a contribution from the City of Bunbury.
Once the works are completed, the City of Bunbury will manage ongoing maintenance works.
As stated by Minister Assisting the Transport Minister David Michael:
"Bunbury and its surrounds are one of our State's most important and sensitive coastal areas with a high risk of coastal inundation.
"Upgrades are vital to the protection of this key infrastructure and this funding will enable the City of Bunbury to provide ongoing maintenance to ensure its long-term preservation."
As stated by Bunbury MLA Don Punch:
"Thank you to the Cook Labor Government for this investment into the long-term preservation of Bunbury's important coastal areas around Koombana Bay and the Leschenault Inlet.
"I look forward to working with the City of Bunbury to upgrade this critical infrastructure, which is vital to the protection of this land for future generations."
