State Highway Patrol crack down on freeway speedsters

State Highway Patrol officers have impounded the cars of two men after they were allegedly caught speeding on Melbourne freeways today.

Officers were patrolling the Tullamarine Freeway at Gladstone Park when they allegedly detected a black Holden commodore ute travelling at 156km/h in an 80km/h zone about 9.30am.

Police quickly intercepted the car and subsequently performed a drug test on the driver who allegedly returned positive to methylamphetamine.

The 49-year-old Gladstone Park man had his car impounded for a month at a cost of $896.10 and is expected to be charged on summons with speeding and drug driving offences.

In a separate incident, another unit patrolling the Monash Freeway near Notting Hill intercepted a Mitsubishi sedan allegedly travelling at 173km/h in a 100km/h zone about 1.45pm.

The 28-year-old Mount Waverley man had his car impounded for a month at a cost of $896.10 and is expected to be charged on summons with speeding offences.
