- State Government commits $15 million to construct new city innovation hub
- Facility to be located on Murray Street in Perth
- The hub will become a central space for collaboration and research in WA
The Cook Government is investing $15 million towards the construction of a state-of-the-art medical research and innovation hub in Perth.
Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson said this exciting new initiative marked a significant milestone in the State Government's plan to foster groundbreaking advancements in medical innovation.
The Murray Street hub will be a central city space for collaboration, research, and development, bringing together leading innovators and researchers from across the sector.
The hub will link to facilities including the East Metropolitan Health Service Innovation Hub, QEII medical research precinct and the biomedical industry precinct in Floreat.
The Cook Government's groundbreaking Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund supports innovators with regular funding opportunities - and this hub will encourage more innovation projects in Western Australia.
Since the FHRI Fund was established in 2020, approximately $185 million in grants have been awarded to more than 627 recipients, to support health and medical research and innovation in WA. Over the next four years a further $250 million is available to fund more programs and initiatives.
The hub is located at 128-132 Murray Street in Perth and will be built inside a heritage-listed former utilities building that was constructed in the 1890s.
The construction tender is currently live, signalling the next step in turning this vision into reality.
As stated by Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson:
"The Cook Government is focused on supporting local innovative researchers to develop breakthrough treatments.
"This innovation hub is vital to drive collaboration and foster new ideas that will improve health care delivery and outcomes across Western Australia.
"By investing in infrastructure that supports research and innovation, we ensure WA remains at the forefront of health advancements.
"This project has enormous potential to create more jobs, attract more investment and further support the WA economy."
