Statement By Chair, CSPL, Welcoming New Ministerial Code

Statement by the Chair, Committee on Standards in Public Life, welcoming the new Ministerial Code.

Maintaining high standards in public life requires leadership and regular attention to ensure processes and systems are effective in encouraging conduct that lives up to the Principles of Public Life.

The Committee therefore welcomes the publication of the new Ministerial Code today which outlines the conduct and standards the Prime Minister expects from his Ministerial team.

We welcome the prominence given to the Nolan Principles in the Code. Those Principles, which have stood the test of time, reflect what is expected of all those serving the public - whether elected or appointed.

We're also pleased that the new Code strengthens the independence of the Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards, giving them the power to initiate investigations. This was recommended in the Committee's 2021 report, Upholding Standards in Public Life.
