Since the Allan Labor Government refused to ban machetes, incidents have continued to occur in escalating seriousness.
In Melton on Monday afternoon, families were forced to flee when young offenders aged 15 and 16, wielding machetes, began a terrifying confrontation in a suburban shopping area.
And just last night, five young people under the age of 17 were arrested after a high-speed car chase and were all found to be carrying machetes.
The Liberals and Nationals have on multiple occasions moved legislative changes to ban the machete in Victoria, yet this has not been supported by the Allan Labor Government.
Labor could have acted months ago to ban machetes and get them off the street. Instead, they played political games and refused to do anything other than a smoke-and-mirrors move to legislate that a machete is a type of knife.
Real action must be taken now before more serious incidents occur.
The Liberals and Nationals are committed to community safety as a priority, as all Victorians deserve to feel safe in public places.
