Statement on national electricity market suspension

I welcome the Australian Energy Market Operator's (AEMO) decision to suspend the electricity market across jurisdictions including Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the ACT.

Electricity lines

This action by AEMO is to secure energy supply in National Electricity Market (NEM) states, including here in New South Wales.

This decision will help prevent energy companies from putting energy reliability at risk by unnecessarily withdrawing supply.

This comes after the Australian Energy Regulator yesterday reminded generators of their obligations under the National Electricity Rules.

I expect power companies to do the right thing by their customers and the country.

We will continue to work closely with the federal government and other states as well as the independent market operator to navigate the situation in the NEM.
