Statement Regarding Destruction Of Council Property

Townsville City Council is calling on community members with any information on the destruction of Council property to come forward after a crime-fuelled week led to more than $300,000 worth of damage to city infrastructure.

In the last week two of Council's mobile CCTV camera trailers have been destroyed by vandals while deployed at the Bohle and Woodstock, as well as a Council vehicle also being stolen and extensively damaged at the weekend.

Not only is the cost of the damage of the vehicle in the tens of thousands, but there is significant cost to the community while the vehicle is offline and unable to service Townsville.

Council has significantly invested in community safety in recent years through our parks boulder program, alongside Council's extensive CCTV camera network of more than 600 fixed cameras and six mobile trailer cameras that can be deployed across the city.

These cameras are incredibly valuable for community safety and allows Council to work with QPS in real-time to both deter and respond to crime and antisocial behaviour.

Council does not take this destruction of public property lightly and is working with QPS to identify those responsible for more than $300,000 worth of damage to ratepayers.
