Statewide flood update 9 October

NSW SES

NSW SES continue to respond to a prolonged flood campaign in Western and Southern areas of the State. Eastern parts of the State will be on watch over the weekend due to current weather impacting these areas.

Overnight we have seen the predicted weather system move from inland NSW where rain eased slightly and continue towards the east. The Illawarra, Central Coast and Sydney Metropolitan saw heavy rainfall throughout the night.

There is a current severe weather warning for damaging winds on the east coast fringe including parts of Hunter, Mid North Coast, Illawarra and Sydney Metropolitan. With the grounds already saturated flash flooding is a major concern in these coastal locations.

Overnight NSW SES volunteers have been busy responding to 343 requests for assistance since 6pm last night - with 21 of those being flood rescues.

We currently have 78 flood products out including Emergency Warnings for Oura Beach Camping near Wagga and Western Plains Tourist Park at Dubbo.

Many communities within Western NSW have been impacted. NSW SES is working closely with DPI and Local Land Services to understand the broader impact on primary producers as flood waters continue downstream.

NSW SES are urging all those travelling to Bathurst for the Bathurst 1000 to plan your trip carefully and allow for extra travel time and to make safe choices. There is a current moderate flood warning for the Macquarie River in this region.

We ask to monitor road conditions and if you should come across flood affected roads, turn around and find an alternate route.

As school holidays draw to a close today and many families will be travelling, we're asking that you be aware of your surroundings, particularly if travelling on unfamiliar roads. Monitor weather conditions closely, allow extra time for travel and make safe decisions for you and your family.

Every flood is different. Impacts from recent floods mean conditions and environments may have changed. Future floods may be different than expected or experienced.

People in the impact locations should:

  • Keep clear of creeks, low lying rivers and storm drains.
  • Never enter flood water.
  • Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.
