Tatauranga umanga Māori - Statistics on Māori businesses: December 2024 quarter presents information on one subset of Māori businesses that contribute to our country's economy. This release includes data on Māori authorities and related businesses. It does not cover all Māori businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Māori authorities are defined as businesses that receive, manage, and/or administer assets held in common ownership by iwi and Māori. Māori authorities are largely identified through their tax codes as registered with Inland Revenue. Any business within a Māori authority ownership group is also included for the purposes of Tatauranga umanga Māori.

Key facts

In the December 2024 quarter, around 1,450 Māori authorities and related businesses were in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population.

All figures are actual values and are not adjusted for seasonal effects.

In the December 2024 quarter compared with the December 2023 quarter:

• the total value of sales by Māori authorities was $1,233 million, up $48 million (4.1 percent)
• the total value of purchases by Māori authorities was $897 million, up $13 million (1.5 percent)
• the total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities was 12,160, up 290 jobs (2.4 percent)
• the total value of earnings by employees of Māori authorities was $253 million, up $33 million (15 percent)
• Māori authorities exported $254 million worth of goods, up $35 million (16 percent).

Business financial data

Industry sales and purchases for Māori authorities and related businesses in the December 2024 quarter were:

• primary industries ‒ $407 million in sales, $281 million in purchases
• goods-producing industries ‒ $237 million in sales, $196 million in purchases
• services industries ‒ $589 million in sales, $420 million in purchases.

Due to the small number of Māori authorities in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population, some industries have been grouped together to allow more data to be released.

• Primary industries include businesses involved in farming, forestry, fishing, and mining.
• Goods-producing industries include businesses involved in manufacturing; utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and waste services; and construction.
• Services industries include businesses involved in health care and social assistance, real estate, travel agencies, and management services ‒ for example, head offices.

For the December 2024 quarter compared with the December 2023 quarter, the total value of sales by Māori authorities and related businesses rose $48 million.

By industry, the largest movements were:

• primary industries, up $52 million (15 percent)
• goods-producing industries, up $32 million (15 percent)
• arts, recreation, and other services, down $20 million (28 percent).

Note that sales reported here may include donations and government funding. These funding sources are more prevalent in services industries.

Business employment data

For Māori authorities and related businesses in the December 2024 quarter compared with the December 2023 quarter:

• the number of filled jobs for men was 5,370, up 180 jobs (3.4 percent)
• the number of filled jobs for women was 6,790, up 110 jobs (1.7 percent)
• the value of total earnings for men was $128 million, up $21 million (19 percent)
• the value of total earnings for women was $124 million, up $13 million (11 percent).

The total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities and related businesses rose by 290 jobs in the December 2024 quarter compared with the December 2023 quarter. The movements by industry group were:

• primary industries, down 140 jobs (4.4 percent)
• goods-producing industries, down 40 jobs (5.7 percent)
• services industries, up 470 jobs (5.9 percent).

Total earnings for employees of Māori authorities and related businesses rose $33 million to $253 million in the December 2024 quarter compared with the December 2023 quarter. The movements in earnings by industry group were:

• primary industries, up $7.2 million (12 percent)
• goods-producing industries, up $2.8 million (19 percent)
• services industries, up $23 million (16 percent).

Goods exports

In the December 2024 quarter compared with the December 2023 quarter, the value of:

• total goods exports by Māori authorities was $254 million, up $35 million (16 percent)
• exports of milk powder, butter, and cheese was $80 million, up $6.7 million (9.1 percent)
• exports of all other goods was $174 million, up $29 million (20 percent); other goods exported by Māori authorities include kaimoana (seafood), meat, machinery, and wine.

Note that goods may be exported by businesses in both the primary industries (for example, livestock or unprocessed seafood), and the goods-producing industries (for example, meat, dairy products, and wine).

Data updates to Tatauranga umanga Māori

Changes in business ownership and structure, including the sale of subsidiaries and acquisition of new businesses, are reflected in these results. These adjustments can lead to some businesses being reclassified into different industry groups, or businesses being added to, or removed from, the population. Each business is categorised based on the industry that most accurately reflects its primary activity for the reporting period.

Data on Māori authorities presented in this release are based on the revised population used for the 2023 annual release.

Counts of Māori authorities in the annual release are based on business demography data. Due to different levels of coverage, the counts presented in this quarterly release will differ from those published in the annual release.
