Townsville's stinger nets are set to be re-installed at popular Townsville beaches this week.
Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said contractors removed the city's stinger nets in preparation for the recent severe weather event.
"In order to avoid damage to the region's stinger nets in the recent heavy rain, river run-off and high tides, Council made the call to have the city's stinger nets removed at the end of January," Cr Greaney said.
"Now the worst of the weather is over, the seas are clearing up and the recent king tides have passed, the contractor will once again re-install stinger nets at The Strand, Balgal Beach, Magnetic Island and Pallarenda."
Councillor Greaney reminded the community to stay vigilant in the ocean as stinger season was well and truly underway.
"Townsville's stinger season is from November to May, when there's an increase in marine stinger activity in the water around Townsville," she said.
"As the rain eases and the temperature rises people are wanting to take a dip at our beaches to cool down and enjoy the best of what our lifestyle has to offer.
"While stinger nets provide a little more reassurance for our community to enjoy our beautiful beaches, people need to remember they are not 100 per cent effective at stopping stingers getting through, so it's important that anyone heading into the water takes the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe.
"We also urge swimmers to refrain from sitting on, playing near, or interfering with the stinger enclosures, as jellyfish can sometimes wash over the top or through the sides.
"Any swimmers who are stung should immediately notify the lifeguards or lifesavers on duty."
Stinger nets will be re-installed from Tuesday, with the Rockpool set to reopen to public use from Wednesday 19 February.
