Mirrabooka Detectives have charged a man in relation to an incident last night, Saturday 26 June 2021, in which a car with a child inside it was stolen and subsequently crashed.
About 8:00pm police were called to a residence in Halland Way, Westminster, in response to a report that a vehicle had crashed into the garage of residence. Several police vehicles were deployed to the scene under emergency conditions and upon arrival they located a man with the vehicle, and a child strapped inside the vehicle.
Initially the attending officers were unable to establish a link between the man and the child, however the identity of the child's mother was established and another police unit was sent to her residence.
It was established the child's parents had left the 7-month-old child in the care of a babysitter, who was identified as the registered owner of the crashed vehicle and an associate of the man located at the crash scene.
Further inquiries were made with the babysitter and it was further established the woman had agreed to provide a man, who is known to her, a lift from Tapping to the Perth CBD. They arrived at a city location on Brisbane Street about 5:00pm. The woman exited her vehicle to speak to a friend, when she observed her vehicle being driven away by the man she had given a lift to.
Fortunately, the child was not injured during the incident and arrangements were made for the child to be returned to her parents.
A 30-year-old man from Currambine has been charged with 'Steal Motor Vehicle' and 'Person Forcibly/Fraudulently Takes/Entices Away/Detains a Child U/16'. He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today, Sunday 27 June 2021.
