This Rail Safety Week, 5 to 11 August 2024, Canberrans are asked to remember their personal responsibilities while on or around the light rail corridor.
"Rail Safety Week is an important annual reminder for everyone travelling on or around light rail to be alert and limit distractions in order to stay safe," Minister for Transport Chris Steel.
"No matter whether you are a pedestrian crossing the road, a passenger travelling by light rail, or a driver along the corridor, we all play a role in rail safety.
"With light rail reaching more than 18 million passenger trips since April 2019, this successful service is now part of the daily commute for many Canberrans.
"It's really important that all members of our community understand their personal responsibilities to ensure their own safety and the safety of others.
"This means staying behind the yellow line while waiting on light rail platforms, stopping to look both ways before you cross light rail tracks and putting away phones and taking off headphones when moving around platforms."
To mark the beginning of Rail Safety Week, four new light rail safety wraps designed by local students were unveiled.
These have been designed by students Lachlan Bell and Liam Hunter from Daramalan College, Bryan Zhao from Dickson College, and Alexander Fitzsimons from Gungahlin College.
"Each design provides a unique and creative interpretation of light rail safety messaging. They will be on two of our light rail vehicles for the next year and are a great example of the creative talent in our local schools," said Minister Steel.
"We are also giving Canberrans the opportunity to vote for their favourite design from 32 shortlisted submissions this week. Student posters will be displayed onboard two light rail vehicles and at Gungahlin Village shopping centre, with QR codes the public can scan to vote for their favourite design."
Rail Safety Week is an annual community awareness week held in Australia and New Zealand. Now in its 19th year, this TrackSAFE initiative aims to create a heightened awareness of the importance of rail safety.
This year marks the sixth consecutive year Transport Canberra and Canberra Metro Operations has supported the initiative.
