Yarra Ranges Shire Council
Council endorsed the new Stormwater Community Reference Panel at the meeting held on Tuesday 11 February. The Panel will now work with Council to provide a community voice to guide the development of key projects, including municipal-wide flood modelling and stormwater management initiatives under the Stormwater Management Plan.
In total Council received 14 applications with representation from across the municipality. All the applicants were considered suitably qualified and have been invited to be a part of the Panel. Unfortunately, two people have subsequently withdrawn.
Yarra Ranges Mayor Councillor Jim Child said this Panel will be an integral link between the community, Council and the actions listed in the Stormwater Management Plan.
"For a number of people across our municipality the issue of stormwater flooding is of vital importance, and this is a real opportunity for our community to get involved in monitoring and advising on the actions as listed in the Stormwater Management Plan and learn more about stormwater and flood management challenges affecting the municipality.
"It was unfortunate that two people have withdrawn from the Panel, and would I urge members of any Flood Watch group to get in contact with Council if they would like to join the Panel to ensure that their important voices are at the table.
"The challenges of stormwater management are anticipated to grow due to climate change, urban development, and increased population pressures and that's why it's important this Panel is formed.
"We look forward to the Panel being able to start meeting and getting on with putting the Plan into action," said Cr Child.
Regular updates will be provided to the community through Council meetings and anyone who is interested in dedicated information on stormwater can sign up to the Source E-newsletter on Council's website at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/stormwater.
