Strathfieldsaye Town Square Construction Begins

Works on a major $1.5M project to create a town square and commercial heart in Strathfieldsaye where residents can shop, gather, meet, attend events and enjoy has commenced.

The creation of a town square is a key project of the Strathfieldsaye Urban Development Framework which was developed with extensive community involvement and adopted by Council in 2017.

City of Greater Bendigo Presentation and Assets Director Brian Westley said the new town square is under construction at the corner of Apsley Lane and Wellesley Street.

"The project also includes construction of shared paths, public space infrastructure and landscaping within the currently unmade grassy and treed road reserve of Wellesley Street located between Apsley Street and Strathfieldsaye Road," Mr Westley said.

"The new public space will feature a range of amenities and facilities to enhance the quality of life and sense of place for both residents and visitors to Strathfieldsaye. It will also encourage future development of active retail and commercial spaces at ground level and apartment living on upper levels.

"We are creating a landmark destination with links to other public facilities that will showcase the unique identity of Strathfieldsaye, provide a gathering place for the community and stimulate future private investment and land redevelopment in the township."

Features of the project include:

  • Flexible paved gathering spaces to cater for a range of community uses, including markets and cultural celebrations
  • A shared path designed to ensure safety and accessibility for all users for walking, running and cycling activities along the site
  • Raised garden beds to provide shading, seating and a barrier to car access
  • Hardscape commercial break out area to allow businesses to extend their services and products to the public space
  • Perimeter footpaths to service future commercial frontages and provide opportunities for slower-moving pedestrian traffic and connect the site to the surrounding streets and amenities
  • Multiple lawn areas to provide green and open spaces for relaxation, recreation and socialisation
  • Native garden beds to showcase local flora and fauna and provide habitat and food for native wildlife and pollinators
  • Native grass areas to create natural and low-maintenance ground cover

The design of this new public space was informed by community feedback and developed by the City of Greater Bendigo's Landscape Design team in partnership with the Traditional Owners the Dja Dja Wurrung.

Construction of the project is expected to be complete by the end of 2024.
