Students interested in pursuing a career in mental health support are being provided with valuable on the job experience, thanks to a $20 million dollar investment from the NSW Liberals and Nationals in Government.
Delivered through headspace, more than 100 students studying psychology, social work and occupational therapy have been given the opportunity to gain work experience through a clinical placement program.
Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor said the program was an incredible chance for students to develop critical skills and knowledge in a clinical setting.
"This placement program is giving students hands-on, real-world experience as they work with young consumers who are seeking support through headspace," Mrs Taylor said
"Not only does the program provide an important learning opportunity for mental health clinicians in training, it also supports the rising demand for headspace services.
"We are encouraged by the amount of positive feedback and uptake we've seen in the program, with students from Armidale, Port Macquarie, Dubbo, Nowra, Wollongong, Newcastle and Sydney embracing this opportunity."
Clinical educators have been overseeing students as they conduct mental health assessments and deliver clinical sessions for young people.
CEO of headspace Jason Trethowan said placing additional student clinicians in headspace centres in NSW has increased capacity so more young people can access help when they need it.
"The last 2 years have been incredibly challenging for many young people and demand on services like headspace is higher than ever. It's vital young people can access help when going through difficult periods in their lives," Mr Trethowan said.
The headspace Student Placement Program is part of the $20 million headspace COVID-19 Recovery Package which is being implemented from January 2022 to June 2024.
The program is supporting places for 350 students studying social work, occupational therapy, as well as psychology masters and doctorate candidates.
