Stricter Laws, Liquor Inspectors Aid Katherine

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is continuing its comprehensive and consistent response to reduce crime in Katherine, highlighted by stronger laws and new programs.

"We are actively reducing crime across the Territory, and we know the impact it has had on the Katherine community," said Ms Boothby, who recently visited the town.

"The CLP's stronger bail laws under Declan's Law ensure that serious violent offenders and repeat serious offenders are taken off our streets protecting Territorians and delivering justice for victims."

There have been more than 200 arrests since police launched Operation Oxley in the Katherine region on December 2 last year.

Member for Katherine, Jo Hersey, highlighted the importance of a comprehensive, consistent response to address community safety in Katherine.

"Katherine has been neglected for too long under the previous Labor government," Mrs Hersey said.

"We know Katherine is a resilient community and under a CLP government the community concerns are now being heard."

During her visit, which came three days before stronger bail laws under Declan's Law commenced on January 6, Ms Boothby attended the Big Rivers Regional Coordination meeting, where it was identified that the region was without two dedicated liquor inspectors.

"We couldn't allow this to happen when the town needs all the help it can get. While recruitment is underway, a rotational roster is now in place to maintain oversight in the region," said Ms Boothby.

This interim arrangement will see liquor inspectors travelling to the Katherine and the Big Rivers region from Darwin, maintaining presence in Mataranka, Larrimah, and Katherine.

"This ensures that inspectors remain on the ground to oversee the responsible sale, supply, service, promotion, and consumption of liquor, enhancing community safety," Ms Boothby said.

"There is no doubt alcohol is a problem in the Northern Territory, including the Katherine region - a problem Labor failed to address.

"The CLP's new nuisance public drinking laws also empower police to charge and arrest people consuming alcohol in prohibited public places, strengthening community confidence that we're reducing alcohol-related harm."

To further address crime, the CLP Government's Circuit Breaker program has been expanded to Katherine after its successful rollout in Darwin and Alice Springs.

The program addresses the root causes of offending, working with Department of Children and Families, police, health services and education to ensure a comprehensive approach along with parental accountability and helping break the cycle of harmful behaviour.

Ms Boothby also met with local businesses to discuss the impact crime is having on their operations.

"I have been advocating for years for measures and resources to keep our Katherine community safe while the previous Labor government neglected us," said Mrs Hersey.

"I am pleased to see the CLP Government and our ministers give Katherine the attention it deserves by properly resourcing liquor inspectors, expanding the Circuit Breaker program and taking action through Operation Oxley."
