Strong Crack Down On Hooning

Felix Ellis, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management

The Tasmanian Government is pumping the brakes on reckless drivers with its firm crack down on hooning offences.

As a part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government's 100-day Plan, drafting of a Bill is underway to target unsafe driving behaviour, ensuring that there are significant consequences for those who put people and property in danger.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis said he's committed to throwing the book at those who selfishly put other road users and themselves in danger.

"Everyday Tasmanians that do the right thing on our roads can have their lives changed in an instant by hooning and reckless drivers," Minister Ellis said.

"The drafting of this Bill is the first step in saving lives and protecting the community from those that feel they're above the law.

"A fundamental part of our 2030 Stronger Plan for Tasmania's Future is to crack down and introduce stronger penalties for hooning, road rage and vehicle theft.

"This includes increasing the duration that a vehicle is clamped or confiscated, and for repeat offenders, their vehicle will be forfeited to the Crown or crushed.".

Among other amendments, this Bill will double the penalties for the offences of dangerous and reckless driving behaviour, motor vehicle theft and road rage.
