The Southern Region Student Residence officially opened today, supporting regional students to access Years 11 and 12 at their college of choice.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the new student residence at Rose Bay welcomed its first intake of students at the start of the 2024 school year, with 22 young people currently living in supported accommodation whilst completing their studies.
"The Tasmania Liberal Government's investment of $5.3 million provides our regional students in the South with quality student accommodation options," Minister Palmer said.
The government currently operates student residences in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.
"We are committed to the ongoing operations of student residences across Tasmania to support regional and remote students seeking access to full college course offerings," Minister Palmer said.
"For many students residing at our student residences, this is an incremental step towards gaining confidence and experience by living in a semi-independent supported accommodation environment.
"Students in residence are also encouraged to participate in other activities including sport and arts-based activities such as plays and musicals."
Following the closure of the Springvale Hostel in 2022, the Department of Education, Children and Young People has taken over operational responsibility for our student residence in Southern Tasmania.
This new facility will support about 30 students each year and is operated by a group of dedicated staff including the Student Residence Manager, supervisors and a youth worker.
"I want to acknowledge the contributions of our staff in supporting our regional young people through this very important phase in their lives, and helping them grow into independent young people," Minister Palmer said.
