Student Safety Top Priority For Coalition In Hunter

NSW Nationals

A Coalition Government will deliver $3 million in funding to upgrade a notorious Hunter Valley intersection making it safer for local families and visitors traveling on Wine Country Drive.

The intersection of Wine Country Drive and Lomas Lane at Nulkaba will be upgraded to include traffic lights, and the construction of dedicated pedestrian crossings and cycling lanes.

Nationals' candidate for Hunter, Sue Gilroy, said safety at the intersection had been raised with her from a broad cross section of the community, including local families.

"This is a desperately needed upgrade that will help reduce congestion and make it safer for road users and pedestrians exploring the picturesque Hunter Valley," Ms Gilroy said.

"Cessnock is a rapidly growing part of the Hunter Valley yet has been left behind for decades when it comes to critical infrastructure.

"Each day, more than 1,200 students come and go from the nearby St Phillip's Christian College.

"On a regular basis, I hear of near misses at this intersection that without these upgrades could one day result in a tragedy.

"The Coalition is committed to delivering projects that support our local communities and make life in the Hunter safer.

St Phillip's Christian College have pledged an additional $2 million towards the project. The college currently serves around 1,000 families, while the nearby

Hunter Valley Wildlife Park, located on Lomas Lane, attracts over 100,000 visitors per year.
