In a dynamic initiative to shape Lismore City Council's future local workforce, 41 students from four local schools are today receiving a hands-on introduction to the diverse and essential roles within Council at the newly upgraded Crozier Field pavilion.
Students will learn about various Council's operations to showcase future career pathways, develop skills, build community connections, prepare students for the workforce and ensure long-term sustainability and resilience.
Lismore City Council General Manager Jon Gibbons said the student showcase event is more than just an educational outing.
"Today is a glimpse into a world of local government operations that students – and the public - do not often see," he said.
"Through interactive sessions, students will delve into the sophisticated workings of community services, including waste management, fleet and open spaces, water and wastewater, law enforcement, plus roads and engineering.
"We are explaining to the students how we manage the day-to-day goals and operations of many vital services, showing them first-hand the operational aspect behind the scenes, what tools are needed and how our staff work to achieve these goals."
Council's Acting Manager of People and Culture, Alex Geikie, said the outcomes benefit students and our entire community.
"Students gain insight into the variety of careers available in their local community, sparking interest in fields they may not have previously considered," he said.
"Understanding the diverse roles within the Council can inspire students to pursue careers that directly contribute to their community's wellbeing. By engaging in hands-on activities, students develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of local government and how it functions.
"Students see how essential services are managed, which can lead to more informed career choices and encourage students to take advantage of the rewarding opportunities available with a career at Lismore City Council."
Students from Nimbin Central School, St John's College Woodlawn, Summerland Christian School, and The Rivers Secondary College Kadina Campus are participating in today's Student Showcase event, which is funded and supported by the NSW Government's Regional Industry Education Partnerships Training Services.
