Monash Council is stepping up its advocacy campaign to achieve the right outcomes for the Glen Waverley Activity Centre through the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project.
Mayor Stuart James said the community was clear in their feedback on the Victorian Government project.
"For a number of years, Council has been advocating for changes to the SRL project to better serve the community. Recently, over 700 people completed our online survey and 150 attended our information session, with the overwhelming majority telling us that they believe that the SRL is a game changer for Glen Waverley.
"But they also told us they share Council's key concerns of the project's current design and that if the Victorian Government is going to build it, they should build it right.
"Council has advocated on this for a long time, and now we're imploring our community to add their voice to our campaign.
"In the lead up to November's state election, Glen Waverley residents may be visited by candidates at their house, called on the phone or approached at the shops. I encourage you to tell them you support SRL in Glen Waverley, but if we're going to build it, build it right.
"I thank our community for their support, especially people who took the time to complete our survey or attend our information session," said Cr James.
When speaking with election candidates, Glen Waverley residents are encouraged to ask:
- How will they ensure the SRL project creates a future thriving Glen Waverley?
- What will they do to ensure the SRL station connects underground with the existing Glen Waverley station without street closures?
- How can we save Kingsway from more traffic so it can be made more pedestrian friendly?
- How the SRL Authority will ensure there is car parking available close to our businesses?
Concerns reported in community consultation about the current SRL proposal included:
- That the existing Glen Waverley station should be undergrounded with a direct pedestrian connection to the new SRL station.
- That Myrtle Street should be extended to create a ring road to support Council's long-term vision for a more pedestrian friendly environment on Kingsway.
- That off-street parking options need to be considered close to businesses in Kingsway.
