Subway Socceroos squad named to face Mexico

Subway Socceroos' Head Coach, Graham Arnold has named his 23-man squad for the September FIFA International Men's Window, with some fresh faces included for the clash with Mexico in Dallas at AT&T Stadium on Saturday, 9 September.

The meeting with Mexico - currently ranked #12 in the FIFA World Rankings - follows the Subway Socceroos most recent match against reigning FIFA World Cup™ Champions, Argentina in Beijing.

Arnold's senior brigade of Mat Ryan (AZ Alkmaar), Aziz Behich (Melbourne City FC), Milos Degenek (FK Crvena zvezda), Mitchell Duke (Fagiano Okayama) Jackson Irvine (FC St Pauli) and Mathew Leckie (Melbourne City FC) will all make the trip to the United States in a squad which also features five uncapped players.

Fresh off a move to EFL Championship side, Middlesborough FC, Sam Silvera earns his first Subway Socceroos call up, where he will be joined by Ashley Maynard-Brewer (Charlton Athletic FC) who will have the opportunity to work alongside Mat Ryan and Tom Glover (Middlesborough FC) under the tutelage of John Crawley.

Defender Cameron Burgess (Ipswich Town FC) will also join the Subway Socceroos for the first time, following strong performances in the EFL Championship. Originally born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Burgess emigrated to Australia with his family as an 11-year-old where he played for ECU Joondalup in Perth before returning to Europe after securing his first professional contract with Fulham FC.

Alessandro Circati returns for his second senior national team camp after seeing plenty of game time with Parma Calcio 1913 in Serie B this season, while Nick D'agostino (Viking FK) will also join the camp in Dallas.

Subway Socceroos' Head Coach, Graham Arnold said the chance this window presents to the younger members of his squad was an exciting one.

"Playing Mexico is a great opportunity for the entire group, allowing us to not only test ourselves against quality opposition, but also familiarise ourselves with playing in the United States as we look towards 2026," Arnold said.

"We're coming up against top Central American opposition in front of what I'm sure will be a lively home crowd, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the squad approaches and responds to that challenge.

"We've brought several younger players into this camp to give the coaching staff a glimpse at how they can perform both within our system and on the international stage. We've closely monitored the form they're bringing from their clubs, and I've been really impressed with what I've seen overall.

"The new members of the squad will have the benefit of working alongside many of our established, senior players, who will play an important role in instilling the values and principles of our group."

Arnold added that the clash with Mexico, along with upcoming fixtures against England and New Zealand in October, would go a long way to informing his plans for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023^TM and beyond.

"With World Cup qualifiers beginning in November and the Asian Cup in January 2024, these moments that we can come together as a group become all the more valuable," Arnold said.

"These next three games allow us to provide valuable match minutes to players we want to see more of and, alongside the [Subway] Olyroos also playing during September, helps us understand the overall depth of our squad looking ahead," Arnold concluded.
