The Lawler Labor Government is investing in locally-led activities focused on building inclusive communities and strengthening community resilience around suicide prevention.
Over $250,000 has been awarded to 28 community organisations to deliver local activities to create positive and inclusive spaces to strengthen community resilience and raise awareness about suicide prevention.
After receiving a Northern Territory Suicide Prevention Community Grant as part of the previous grant round, the Darwin Dragons Rugby Union Club ran two suicide prevention game rounds last year in partnership with TeamHEALTH, Headspace and Catholic Care. The club also delivered sessions for a range of age groups to provide practical strategies for coping, resilience and managing emotions.
The Darwin Dragons Rugby Union Club will continue this important engagement this year, after a grant in this year's round. Other organisations to receive a grant include Xavier Catholic College in Wurrumiyanga, Galiwin'ku Women's Space in East Arnhem and Young Yarning in Central Australia.
Xavier Catholic College will run a social and wellbeing program for young men; Galiwin'ku Women's Space will host a wellbeing and empowerment workshop; while Young Yarning will provide mental health first aid training to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait people.
The grants aim to empower non-government organisations and community members to deliver important localised suicide prevention projects across the Territory.
Now in its seventh year, the NT Suicide Prevention Community Grants has funded more than $1.65 million, supporting over 200 community projects focused on suicide awareness.
The Lawler Labor Government has partnered with Northern Territory Primary Health Network which contributed $100,000 to the total grant funds available for 2024 - 2025.
Last year, the NT Government, in partnership with NT PHN, the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (AMSANT) and the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), launched a new Suicide Prevention Strategic Framework Implementation Plan, Keeping Everyone Safe 2023 - 2028 here, with this round of grant recipients set to action priority areas identified.
