A new sport and leadership education program for Tasmanians wanting to pursue a career within the growing sports industry in Tasmania has today been announced.
The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of the State's sporting industry and is excited by the growing opportunities the launch of the Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport would create.
The state's elite sporting entities, the Hobart Hurricanes, the Tasmania JackJumpers, the Tasmania Devils and Netball Tasmania have all joined forces with TasTAFE.
Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said the program would provide young Tasmanians with a clear pathway to a career in sports, and create new jobs for Tasmanians.
"The Government has backed our elite sports teams – the Hobart Hurricanes, the Tasmania JackJumpers and the Tasmania Devils – and it's terrific that these organisations have now partnered with TasTAFE and Netball Tasmania to launch the Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport," Minister Street said.
"The Academy perfectly complements the pathways the Government is supporting for elite level sport.
"This initiative will ensure that there is a parallel pathway for students to work towards employment as support staff for our Tasmanian teams playing on the national stage."
Minister for Skills and Training Felix Ellis said the Academy was a game-changer.
"The Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport supercharges the pathway for young people wanting to work in sport by partnering with TasTAFE to integrate the State's leading sports brands into one sports-focused education program," Minister Ellis said.
"Students will be provided with unheralded exposure and opportunities within the inner sanctum on the local sports industry.
"The Academy will support new jobs in a growing industry that will no doubt be a very popular career path choice for young Tasmanians.
"TasTAFE is the inaugural education partner for the 2025 program and are working with the sports industry group to establish a tailored dual-diploma curriculum that focuses on leadership, management and sport.
"Where once moving interstate might have been the only option for Tasmanians pursuing off-field jobs in sport, there is now a viable pathway right here.
"It's another example of how Tasmanian Government is ensuring Tasmania is the best place to live, work and raise a family, which is what our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is all about."
