Support Road Safety And Register Your Vehicle

Canberrans detected committing road offences by the traffic camera network will have their vehicle scanned to make sure their registration is up to date.

Unregistered vehicles are unsafe vehicles. If a vehicle is unregistered it is also uninsured which means that in addition to potentially receiving multiple fines, drivers are not protected financially if they cause a motor vehicle accident.

There are no new offences being introduced. Access Canberra will soon start checking registration details when processing other traffic infringements.

This is scheduled to start from August across the entire road safety camera network including speed cameras, mobile device detection cameras and red light cameras.

An infringement for driving an unregistered vehicle is $700 and an infringement for driving an uninsured vehicle is $973.

Over the next few weeks letters sent out for registration renewals will include information about the updated processing capability to remind Canberrans about their obligations to register their vehicles.

A campaign to support this important road safety initiative will also start in July ahead of fines being implemented.

We are committed to ongoing education and awareness to keep our local roads safe. Safe vehicles is a key pillar of the Safe System approach to achieve Vision Zero: zero deaths or serious injuries on ACT roads.

You can renew registration for most vehicles online if it has been unregistered for less than 12 months.

If your vehicle has been unregistered for more than 12 months, it will require a roadworthy inspection, and you will need to visit an Access Canberra Service Centre to establish the vehicle registration.

To check your registration status, renew your registration online, or to find out more about what to do if your registration expired more than 12 months ago, visit www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au and select 'Renew rego' under 'Popular pages' on the homepage.

Road safety camera relocation

From the end of June 2024 traffic heading south on Northbourne Avenue through the intersection of Bunda Street will be monitored for speed and red light offences.

This is not an additional camera in the fixed camera network. It is a relocation of an existing fixed camera with the location chosen for several reasons including its proximity to the bus interchange and light rail stop with increased vehicle and pedestrian movement.

Our road safety camera network plays an important role in supporting road safety by detecting and deterring unsafe driving behaviours and improving pedestrian safety in town centres throughout Canberra.

These cameras exist to help ensure safe travel with numerous studies showing that 'low level' speeding contributes to a significant percentage of road casualties and fatalities in the ACT.

Variable message signs will be in operation throughout the Civic 40 km/h area to remind motorists to slow down in this highly pedestrianised and built-up area in the middle of the city.

ACT Government operated cameras are in addition to police enforcement and ACT Policing will continue to target those who choose to speed and put at risk vulnerable road users in our City precinct.
