Supporting safe, well and positive learners

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Education

Students in Tasmanian Government primary schools will be provided with a Physical Wellbeing Action Pack to help them to stay healthy, have more energy, feel confident, manage stress, and sleep well.

The Department of Education has recently introduced a recommendation of two hours per week of timetabled physical activity in primary schools, as part of our 2020-21 Physical Wellbeing and the Environment Action Plan.

The Action Pack is intended to promote the recommended hours of physical activity and provide schools with the resources and equipment to support what they are already doing in this space.

We know that physical activity has significant benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing and can boost creativity and resilience in our students.

The Action Pack includes equipment such as skipping ropes, hula hoops and balls and is aimed at supporting and encouraging new ways to integrate physical activity into each day via school-based examples and resources.

Importantly, schools play a significant role in supporting regular physical activity and creating positive, healthy learning environments for children and young people.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government recognises that education is the single most powerful driver for improving economic and social outcomes in Tasmania including health, life expectancy, happiness and productivity.

That's why we will continue to support the wellbeing of Tasmania's children and young people to ensure they have the best opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
