The Surveyors Amendment Bill 2024 has today passed Tasmania's Parliament.
Minister for Parks and Environment, Nick Duigan, said these legislative changes have received strong support from industry.
"We welcome the endorsement of both the Institute of Surveyors Tasmania and the Geospatial Council of Australia, noting that these are the professional bodies for surveying in Tasmania," Minister Duigan said.
The amendments around direct supervision will allow the Surveyor General to develop effective guidelines, and ensure there is clarity around obligations. It will also allow expectations for the individual under supervision, and for the supervisor to be managed.
The guidelines will be subject to further consultation with industry as these are developed.
Another key amendment provides greater transparency by ensuring that the public are informed and can make sound consumer choices when seeking to engage a qualified surveyor.
"Importantly, the plan to remake the regulations in 2026 will allow the Tasmanian Liberal Government to develop contemporary regulations that reflect a significant body of work that is being undertaken across jurisdictions to deliver a harmonised approach for training and accreditation approaches for surveyors," Minister Duigan said.
"This will allow surveyors to move across different jurisdictions with recognition and understanding of their transferable post-graduate skills and qualifications, and we look forward to rolling out the welcome mat with Tasmania open for business.
