Supportive Landlord Model Adds 24 Homes in Geraldton

  • Cook Labor Government secures 24 properties to support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness
  • Properties will be managed through the Regional Supportive Landlord approach
  • Part of Cook Labor Government's $4.5 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures

The Cook Labor Government has now secured 24 properties in Geraldton to support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, as part of its record $4.5 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.

The properties will be part of the successful Supportive Landlord Model (SLM) approach, which prioritises getting vulnerable people into permanent housing with wrap around supports. The 24 homes have been secured as part of the Cook Government's commitment to deliver 100 homes across Geraldton, Albany and Kalgoorlie to support people experiencing homelessness.

Geraldton is the first location for establishing the regional SLM, with a target of 40 properties to be delivered. The roll-out of the regional SLM follows the successful SLM, pilot Djuripiny Mia, under a partnership with a community housing provider Housing Choices to deliver 100 social homes across Perth, Peel, and Bunbury.

Since its inception, Djuripiny Mia has delivered 100 homes, and is accommodating nearly 200 people, including families, who were at risk of or experiencing homelessness across Perth, Peel and Bunbury.

In December 2023, Geraldton became the third Australian community to achieve a measurable reduction in street homelessness as part of the Advance to Zero campaign, a national initiative of more than 30 communities working to address homelessness. In 2024, Geraldton also became the second Western Australian community to achieve a measurable reduction in rough sleeping homelessness, with Mandurah Zero Project achieving the milestone in August 2023.

As stated by Housing and Homelessness Minister John Carey:

"In line with the Housing First Approach, the Cook Government is investing in a range of housing and accommodation options including the Supportive Landlord Model - which is continuing to deliver critical outcomes for our community - particularly for the most vulnerable.

"These 24 properties in Geraldton will provide more homes for those who need it most, with relevant wrap-around supports to ensure people can remain in these homes and thrive.

"We've committed $53 million to deliver 100 homes across Geraldton, Albany and Kalgoorlie to support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, through the regional supportive landlord model.

"Along with the construction of the Geraldton Short Stay facility, construction of 16 new tiny homes for social housing and the addition of 24 new homes in the supportive landlord model - the Cook Labor Government is focused on delivering a housing first approach.

"This is all part of our record $4.5 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures which will deliver more than 5,300 social homes and undertake maintenance and refurbishment to many thousands more."

As stated by Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:

"The Cook Labor Government continues to deliver for the Geraldton community, and today we've announced 40 new homes across social housing for seniors and supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness in Geraldton.

"I'm very proud that Geraldton is the first regional town centre where we have expanded our successful supportive landlord model, which will ultimately deliver 40 homes to support people sleeping rough.

"I will always continue to advocate for the Geraldton community and the Cook Labor Government continues to respond to our community's needs."
