We undertake regular activities to monitor and evaluate how well the MRFF is meeting its goals. This includes using a series of performance indicators to assess the progress and eventual impact of the MRFF.
Between March 2024 and May 2024, we conducted a survey to capture data on:
- all MRFF performance indicators across awarded grants
- a subset of indicators for completed grants.
The survey saw a robust response, with 75.5% of 1,328 MRFF grantees (1,002 respondents) participating. The results show:
- a significant 83% of MRFF-funded projects have involved consumers in their research and 83% have engaged with clinicians
- 84% of MRFF projects have focused on a priority population, while 67% have addressed emerging issues. This aligns with the MRFF's mission to direct research towards areas of unmet need
- more than half of MRFF projects involve clinical trials, with at least 744 trials supported. Notably, 59% of these trials are in rural, regional, and remote sites
- the MRFF has supported 7,527 research staff which amounts to 9,959 full-time-equivalent years. It has also attracted $787 million in co-funding and $949 million in new funding, highlighting its significant financial impact on the research community
- while longer-term indicators related to healthcare change and commercialisation show proportionately less progress, there are promising signs. Of the completed projects (14% of respondents), 42% have contributed to healthcare policy or guidelines, and 35% have influenced health professional education.
