Suspended driver charged after crash at Botany

A woman, suspended from driving, has been charged following a crash in Sydney's east overnight.

About 7.10pm (Friday 29 January 2021), emergency services were called to Stephen Road, Botany, after reports of a crash near the intersection of Swinbourne Street.

Police have been told a Toyota Tarago was travelling southbound when it failed to negotiate a bend and struck the gutter, mounting the kerb before colliding with a steel fence.

A two-month-old baby – who was allegedly unrestrained in the back seat – was ejected from a window.

The baby was uninjured and taken to Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick for observation. Three other passengers, including a 19-year-old woman, were also uninjured.

Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command commenced inquiries, revealing the Toyota was unregistered and the driver, a 48-year-old woman, had a suspended licence.

The woman was arrested and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital under police guard for treatment of a minor wrist injury where she also underwent mandatory testing.

She was later transferred to Maroubra Police Station and charged with negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road, drive with child under 6 months not restrained as prescribed, and drive motor vehicle while licence suspended.

The Pagewood woman was granted conditional bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday 3 March 2021.

Police have completed a child at risk notification to Family and Community Services.

Inquiries continue.
