From growing up on a family farm in the wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin to being named 2021 AFL SportsReady Trainee of the Year in Perth; Bassendean resident Jess Cox (20) is kicking career goals and it is only just the beginning.
With her family and colleagues in attendance, Jess was presented the award for her exceptional commitment and achievements as a trainee at Swan Active by AFL SportsReady Field Officer Jade Narkle on Tuesday May 18, 2021.
The self-confessed country kid said her passion for football began at a young age when she played AusKick with the local boys. Since then, the footy hasn't left her hands.
"Footy is a huge part of my life and my dream is to be drafted into the AFL Women's," Jess said.
"Outside of work, I train most days and I also play for the Swan Districts WAFLW league."
Jess said her traineeship at Swan Active had opened many doors and provided different pathways, including the opportunity to obtain her Certificate 4 in Sport and Recreation.
"My love of sport and being actively involved in the community has allowed me to really grow and thrive in my role at Swan Active.
"I'm very grateful for being able to work and connect with amazing people, including my colleagues and Swan Active customers," she said.
During the award presentation, many of her colleagues and peers commended Jess for her enthusiasm and positive attitude, including Jade who said she was "very proud".
"Jess is an amazing trainee to look after, she did everything that was required of her and approached tasks in a mature and timely manner," Jade said.
City of Swan Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Edwards said offering traineeships at Swan Active allowed young people, like Jess, the opportunity to gain job-ready skills in a positive and supportive environment.
