Sweden National Day 6 June

Department of State

On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of the Kingdom of Sweden in celebration of your National Day.

The United States and Sweden established an enduring partnership 241 years ago in 1783 based on our shared commitment to democratic principles, human rights, and freedom. The United States welcomes Sweden's historic accession as a NATO Ally, and we commend Sweden's leadership on strengthening the security of the Nordic-Baltic region. Our nations will continue to support the people of Ukraine as they defend their country against Russia's unprovoked war, and as we pursue justice and accountability for Russia's brutal actions. Together, our nations also will continue to collaborate to overcome the climate crisis, advance peace, and work on shared priorities through our bilateral ties. This past year saw increasing cooperation between our two nations on cyberspace and digital policy, the sustainable and responsible exploration of space, the promotion of LGBTQI+ human rights globally, and in the Arctic Council. I look forward to jointly ensuring a bright, safe, and secure future for our nations.

I join you in celebrating on this special day and send best wishes for health and prosperity to all people in Sweden.
