Sweetnam Park at Uki Set for Major Upgrade

Tweed Shire Council

Council is seeking community feedback on the Draft Concept Plan to upgrade Sweetnam Park at Uki, which is designed to be more flood resilient, welcoming and accessible.

The community is invited to attend a complimentary breakfast and children's activities at Sweetnam Park on Sunday 22 September, from 9 am to 11 am, to discuss the park upgrade and provide feedback.

The upgrade forms part of a $15.5 million funding package from the Australian and NSW Governments to help restore and improve community assets that have been storm or flood damaged.

Sweetnam Park experienced severe damage during the February 2022 flood, which impacted the park and playground.

The proposed upgrade includes a range of exciting enhancements designed to enrich the community experience, featuring new play equipment for children aged 2 to 13 years, with inclusive play elements to ensure everyone can participate.

Council's Manager Parks and Active Communities Murray Smith said the project would ensure Sweetnam Park is safer and more inviting and continues to support the health and wellbeing of Uki residents and visitors.

"We're grateful to the Australian and NSW Governments for their commitment to investing in communities impacted by flooding by helping to restore the vibrant spirit that makes them wonderful places to live," Mr Smith said.

"Their funding helps to achieve this goal by enabling Council to rebuild and enhance infrastructure, creating better spaces for everyone to enjoy with loved ones.

"We're helping rebuild community facilities like parks, sporting and recreational facilities to a more resilient standard so they can withstand increasingly frequent and intense severe weather events.

"Inclusive playgrounds are vital to our community as they provide a space that is accessible to not only children but people of all ages and abilities."

Proposed works at Sweetnam Park include:

  • new play equipment for 2 to 13-year-olds with inclusive play elements
  • natural play elements, including a cubby and climbing net for the littlies
  • half basketball court for youth
  • small-scale skate elements
  • seating and drinking fountain
  • picnic table and shelter
  • connecting pathways
  • landscaping and tree planting.

The Draft Concept Plan is on public exhibition until 4 pm on 27 October 2024.
