Switching On Community Batteries Across Australia

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Australian Government is rolling out community batteries to lower power bills and boost electricity reliability.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has conditionally approved up to 370 batteries through its Community Battery Funding Round 1.

This round will deliver up to $143 million of grants for new community batteries. The grants will unlock an expected $359 million of investment into renewable energy storage.

It is the latest allocation of grants through the Community Batteries for Household Solar program.

In total, the program will deliver over 420 batteries across the country to store power for up to 100,000 households.

The batteries will store rooftop solar power to reduce emissions and energy costs.

Community batteries have switched on recently in Bexley North, Bondi, North Epping and Warriewood.

ARENA will launch Round 2 of at least $28 million in late 2024.
