A police operation has concluded following an authorised protest in Sydney's CBD today.
The high-visibility operation was launched in response to the planned protest today (Sunday 6 October 2024) to ensure the safety of both participants and the wider community.
General duties police were assisted by specialist police from the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Rescue & Bomb Disposal Unit, Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, Police Transport Command and the Dog and Mounted Unit.
About 1.20pm, a 56-year-old man was arrested for allegedly displaying a swastika symbol. He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with knowingly display by public act Nazi symbol without reasonable excuse.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 24 October 2024.
About 5.15pm – after the protest had concluded – a 28-year-old man was detained on Elizabeth Street for an alleged breach of the peace. The man was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was spoken to and released.
Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna, said overall police were pleased with behaviour from the estimated crowd of 10,000.
"The NSW Police worked closely with our partner agencies and protest organisers to execute a significant and robust police operation across the Sydney CBD, which evidently had a successful outcome," Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said.
