The Albanese Government is partnering with the University of Sydney to identify practical solutions to drive women's economic security and equality, drawing on the experiences of women around Australia.

The partnership supports implementation of the Working for Women, the Government's strategy for gender equality in Australia, and will deliver practical, evidence-based direction for Government, industry and community action to improve economic outcomes for women.

The partnership will bring together world-leading research capability, with the University of Sydney's Australian Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion @ Work collaborating with the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research within the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Melbourne.

Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, said the partnership will help build evidence and develop responses through understanding the experiences of women.

"Good research, reflecting on women's real lives, leads to better decision making and better outcomes. This innovative partnership with the University of Sydney will make sure we are using research and evidence to drive tangible change," said Minister Gallagher.

"The experiences of women, including First Nations and migrant women, and their experiences and priorities in relation to work, training, career and care will be at the core of the research.

"The partnership is part of this Government's ongoing commitment to improving the lives of women and achieving a more equal Australia."

The $5 million partnership will inform the development of public policy, with a particular focus on driving women's economic equality and security, including the intersections with women's safety.

Professor Rae Cooper AO, Professor of Gender, Work and Employment Relations at the University of Sydney's Business School, welcomed the announcement.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our research team to assist government to realise the goals of the ambitious Working for Women Strategy," Professor Cooper said.

"We will build a rigorous research evidence base to ensure that government has the data-driven insights it needs to deliver change toward gender equality.

"Led by the Australian Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion at Work at the University of Sydney, this initiative brings together world-leading experts to help make the 'world of work' work better for women.

"We know from our research that when the economy works better for women it works better for all Australians."

The University of Sydney was selected following a competitive grant process.
