Leeton Shire Council is thrilled to announce that the new 3 bin service, including the green lidded FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bin, which commenced on 1 July 2024, is off to a fantastic start.

The first audit report from WormTech, Council's FOGO composting facility in the Western Riverina, revealed that only 1.5% contamination (or 20kg) was found in the 1,260kg sample. WormTech hailed it, "the cleanest sample they've ever reported on."

Cr George Weston, Portfolio Lead for Environment and Climate Change, praised the community's efforts, stating, "We are aware this process required some changes to how our residents sort their waste. It is amazing to see our residents embracing these changes and getting behind this new process with such vigour.

"Please keep these amazing efforts going; results like these will help Leeton in meeting NSW Government's Mandates, such as the 80% waste diversion targets by 2030 and the CO2 net zero reduction targets by 2050.

"Additionally, due to less waste going to the tip, the new service will save our community money on the costs associated with building landfill trenches (in the long run) which is a costly and complex undertaking. Thank you to everyone who is involved," he said.

The introduction of the green lidded FOGO bin, along with the existing red (general waste) and yellow (recycling) bins, provides an efficient and environmentally friendly way to manage household waste.

By adopting these practices, the Leeton Shire community is not only reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill but also contributing to the creation of valuable compost for re-use across local farms, parks and gardens.

Leeton Shire Council thanks all residents for their ongoing support and cooperation in making this new service a success. Together, we are making a positive impact on our environment and paving the way for a greener future.
