We know many people in our community are passionate about remembering and acknowledging the men and women who have served in our armed forces.
This Anzac Day, there will be dawn services held across our city and large crowds are expected to attend these events organised through RSL NSW, as well as the Wollongong Dawn Service at MacCabe Park starting at 5am and the Wollongong ANZAC Day March starting from Wollongong Mall and moving to MacCabe Park via Kembla St, Burelli St and Church Street from 10am. This March is supported by Wollongong City Council.
In the lead up to 25 April, we've had teams working in the 12 parks where services will be held to ensure the grounds and the memorials themselves are looking their best. We're also making sure Wollongong's march route is prepared ahead of its 10am start.
"There is a lot of behind-the-scenes activity in the lead up to Anzac Day across our city to ensure the city's memorial and parks are looking their best for this important date of reflection,'' Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"I know Council's teams take great pride in this work and consider it an opportunity to reflect their appreciation of the service to country undertaken by people across the generations.''
The Anzac Day long weekend is also expected to be a popular one for the city's beaches and foreshore areas and Council's crews are prepared with additional cleaning of public amenities scheduled.
There is also the Peoplecare Triathlon Wollongong on across the weekend, with supporters, residents and visitors able to watch the races across Saturday and Sunday. They'll take place along Cliff Road, Flagstaff Hill and Squires Way across the weekend.
The triathlon is a World Qualifying Event for the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Wollongong. This October event will bring elite, U23, Junior, Para Triathlon and Age-Group athletes from across the globe battling for world championship titles across various distances to the city.
"It's an exciting weekend in Wollongong and I encourage people who are interested in triathlons to check out the event across the weekend. This is definitely the opportunity to scope out some of the best viewing positions ahead of the world championships in October.
"This is the last weekend of the city's beach season with the flags coming down on Sunday across 16 of the city's 17 patrolled beaches with North Wollongong Beach our only year-round patrolled beach,'' Cr Brown said.
"I want to thank all of Council's lifeguards along with the dedicated volunteers from Surf Life Saving who have kept our community safe over the 2024/2025 swim season. We love our beaches and pools in Wollongong and their watchful gazes have ensured we've all been able to swim safely.''
