Taking Politics Out Of Planning 8 October

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is taking the politics out of planning, with public consultation now open on the Land Use Planning and Approvals (Development Assessment Panels) Bill 2024.

The Bill will allow certain developments to be assessed by independent expert Development Assessment Panels established by the Tasmanian Planning Commission, improving the certainty, transparency, and the effectiveness of planning across Tasmania.

Minister for Housing and Planning, Felix Ellis, said the Bill will ensure planning decisions are driven by the planning rules, not the personal biases of individual councillors with an axe to grind.

"There are too many examples where critical housing or job-creating projects are being blocked by ideologically motivated councillors," Minister Ellis said.

"This new legislation will give the community and developers the confidence they need to invest and continue to meet the needs of our growing population.

"Importantly, the Bill streamlines the delivery of homes for Tasmania's most vulnerable by allowing for social and affordable housing developments to be assessed by a Development Assessment Panel.

"This strong new legislation works hand in hand with our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future to deliver 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032.

"We are planning for Tasmania's future, we are planning for growth, and this legislation will be the next step in our long-term plan."
