With almost 13,000 registered dogs and cats in Nillumbik, we're certainly paw-ssionate about our pets. We're renewing our plan that guides domestic animal services in the Shire and are seeking your feedback, whether you're a pet owner or not.
Under the Domestic Animal Act 1994, all councils must review and renew their Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) every four years. With Nillumbik's current plan set to expire in 2025, we're starting work on preparing a new one for 2025-2029.
We're inviting the community to provide their feedback regarding domestic animal management and responsible pet ownership through our online survey at Participate Nillumbik until Sunday 14 July.
A DAMP outlines Council's services, programs and policies relating to animal management, animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, relevant Local Laws and community education. The plan relates to cats and dogs only.
Issues covered include desexing and microchipping, effective control of dogs in public areas, dog on and off-leash areas, nuisance dogs and cats, barking dogs, cat confinement, and the collection and disposal animal excrement.
Community feedback will help us develop a draft Domestic Animal Management Plan, which will be released for feedback in early 2025.
Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan said whether you owned a pet or not, responsible pet ownership affected everyone.
"We love our pets, they're part of the family and play an important role in our lives," Cr Ramcharan said.
"Therefore it's critical we have a plan in place to ensure their welfare. We want to keep our cats and dogs safe, healthy and happy.
"The DAMP is all about responsible pet ownership and supporting pet owners to take care of their animals in the best way they can.
"However, we must balance this with protecting our community, public areas and environment from the impact that some pets can have.
"This is an important issue, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say."
Community consultation is open until 11.59pm, Sunday 14 July.
