TASCAT Celebrates Third Anniversary

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) is celebrating its third-year anniversary, with the Tasmanian Government continuing to grow this important institution.

During 2023/24 TASCAT received 4,763 lodgements and conducted 4,124 hearings. 226 decisions were published highlighting the significant workload of the Tribunal.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, has thanked TASCAT for their work in delivering positive outcomes for Tasmanians.

"The third anniversary of TASCAT is a significant day for all Tasmanians," the Attorney-General said.

"TASCAT plays a vital role in slashing procedural red-tape and finding ways to make our justice system more efficient and accessible.

"I would like to thank all the hard-working staff who support the operation of TASCAT, they do a wonderful job and provide a truly client-centric approach to the administration of justice.

"I would also like to personally thank the TASCAT President, Mr Malcom Schyvens and Registrar, Jarrod Bryan, for their hard work over the past three years.

"Our Government established TASCAT to provide improved access to justice for all Tasmanians and we have big plans to continue growing the Tribunal.

"I am looking forward to the opening of a second office in Launceston early next year, which will provide easier access to justice for Tasmanians in the north and north-west.

"Through the 2024-25 Budget, we have allocated an additional $2.2 million over four years to support their continued growth.

"I have also recently tabled the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (Additional Jurisdictions) Bill 2024 in Parliament, which I hope will transfer a range of new jurisdictions to TASCAT as part of our Government's work to continue to modernise Tasmania's justice system.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is continuing to improve our legal system and the critical institutions which uphold justice in Tasmania."
