Tasmania Police Boost Patrols for Safe New Year

Tasmania Police is pleased with the overall behaviour of Tasmanians during last night's New Year's Eve celebrations, with the majority of attendees enjoying the festivities responsibly.

There was a highly visible police presence across the state focused on community safety and addressing anti-social behaviour.

Acting Inspector Danny Jackson from Southern Police said that the Hobart waterfront, CBD and Regatta Grounds were very busy overnight, especially in the lead up to the 9pm and midnight fireworks as people celebrated the arrival of the new year.

"Pleasingly, most of the crowd were well-behaved, with only a small number of arrests for anti-social behaviour and other offences," he said.

In the North, Inspector Grant Twining said it was a busy night for police, but those celebrating at Beerfest and licensed venues in the Launceston CBD were generally well behaved with only minor anti-social behaviour incidents being reported.

Further, in Western Tasmania, Inspector Anthea Maingay said, "pleasingly there were very few reports of anti-social behaviour with the gathering of people at events across the coast generally well behaved as they celebrated."

"The public is reminded that police will continue patrolling the roads in increased numbers throughout the holiday period and strongly encourage all motorists to make responsible decisions about their driving behaviour."

Tasmania Police remains committed to ensuring community safety and thanks the majority of Tasmanians for their cooperation and responsible celebrations.
