Tasmanian Aboriginal Youth Justice Engagement

Community consultation is underway as part of the development of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Youth Justice Strategy.

The Have your say on the Tasmanian Aboriginal Youth Justice Strategy aims to start community discussion and develop strategies to address the over-representation of Aboriginal children and young people in Tasmania's youth justice system.

Minister for Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, said we need to do more to close the gap and help vulnerable Aboriginal children thrive in our society.

"As part of our commitments under Closing the Gap, we are working to address over-representation in the youth justice system. Reflecting on the value of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture for children and families is a start, followed by building and expanding Aboriginal-led services for these children," Minister Jaensch said.

"I would like to thank the Tasmanian Aboriginal organisations and individuals, and other stakeholders who are working with us to address these statistics and help Tasmanian Aboriginal children thrive.

"Either directly or through these organisations, we want to hear the stories and insights of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children and families about their priorities for early intervention and diversion.

"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future aims to reduce youth re-offending and improve life outcomes for our young people."
